Inventory location accuracy vs record accuracy
A warehouse can have the correct building-level quantity and still fail picking because the units are recorded—or physically stored—in the wrong locations.

Inventory record accuracy asks whether system records match physical inventory under a defined item, quantity, status and location standard. Location accuracy asks whether each item and quantity is in the location where the system says it is. Report both: offsetting location errors can leave the building total correct while pick faces are empty and misplaced stock remains elsewhere.
Define the dimensions of accuracy
Item accuracy confirms identity, quantity accuracy confirms units, location accuracy confirms where inventory resides, status accuracy confirms availability or hold state, and attribute accuracy covers lot, expiry, ownership or other controlled data. A record can pass one dimension and fail another.

Choose the counting grain and tolerance
Define whether the comparison is by item-location, handling unit, lot-location or another grain. State exact-match and tolerance measures separately. A percentage within quantity tolerance should not be labeled exact location accuracy.
Keep denominators visible: locations counted, item-location records, units, value or handling units. Different denominators answer different questions and can move in opposite directions.
Expose offsetting location errors
If ten units are missing from Location A and ten extra units appear in Location B, building-level quantity for the item is correct but both locations are wrong. Picking, replenishment and cycle-count work still suffer.
Report ghost inventory—system quantity with no physical stock—and hidden inventory—physical stock absent from the expected record—alongside final net adjustment. Netting them to zero removes the operational evidence.
Link metrics to process causes
Location errors often originate in unconfirmed putaway, short picks, relocations, replenishment, staging, consolidation, returns, damage holds or label problems. Status and attribute errors may originate in receiving, quality or disposition workflows.
Use transaction and task evidence to correct the point of failure. Recounting and adjusting without cause can improve the report temporarily while the same movement problem continues.
