Worked capacity example

Trace the estimate from floor area to practical positions

For a modeled 80,000 ft² building, assume 68% is usable storage area, each floor position consumes 28 ft² including its aisle share, and four pallet levels fit in the screened vertical envelope. The theoretical result is 80,000 × 68% ÷ 28 × 4 = 7,771 positions. At an 85% planning utilization, the practical planning threshold is 6,605 occupied positions.

Common input mistakes

  • Using exterior or gross area without deducting docks, staging, offices, support and required access.
  • Counting clear height as usable storage height without mapping structure, sprinklers, lights and services.
  • Applying one aisle-density factor to different rack systems, loads, columns and equipment.
