Methodology

How this calculator works

Shows the annualized cost of a forklift beyond its purchase price, including the largest operating cost: labor.

Annual total cost = purchase price ÷ useful life + maintenance + energy per hour × hours + operator wage × hours.

Use the result

Turn the number into a decision

Add financing, battery replacement, chargers, tires, telemetry, downtime, insurance, and residual value for a complete fleet model.

Use this result when operations, finance, and project teams need a transparent business-case assumption for budgeting, approvals, or vendor comparisons.

Run at least three scenarios—conservative, expected, and upside—so one optimistic assumption does not drive the project.

Worked planning example

Test the Forklift Total Cost Calculator with a traceable input set

The calculator opens with the example values below. They demonstrate how the inputs fit together; they are not recommended targets or facility benchmarks. Save the source, date, unit and confidence for every replacement value.

Run a sensitivity check

Change one important input at a time to see which assumption controls the result. Then combine credible adverse inputs in a downside case instead of applying an unexplained blanket adjustment.

Suggested sensitivity plan
DriverTestInterpretation
Purchase price37,800 to 46,200 $Hold other inputs constant first, then combine credible adverse assumptions in a downside case.
Useful life6.3 to 7.7 yearsHold other inputs constant first, then combine credible adverse assumptions in a downside case.
Annual maintenance4,950 to 6,050 $ / yearHold other inputs constant first, then combine credible adverse assumptions in a downside case.

Common input mistakes

  • Comparing equipment price with another option's complete installed cost.
  • Counting revenue, contribution, labor or downtime effects twice.
  • Using one optimistic timing case without ramp-up, recurring cost and downside scenarios.

Make the next decision

Add financing, battery replacement, chargers, tires, telemetry, downtime, insurance, and residual value for a complete fleet model. Save the baseline, conservative and upside cases, then carry the chosen result and unresolved assumptions into My Warehouse Project.
